9th global conference on health promotion
The People’s Republic of China and WHO are the joint-organizers of the Global Conference on Health Promotion in Shanghai on 21-24 November 2016. The Conference is entitled “Promoting health in the Sustainable Development Goals: Health for all and all for health.” More than 1000 leaders in politics, health, and development will participate in this conference.
The goal of this conference is to highlight the critical links between promoting health and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Conference discussions on how health and sustainable goals are inextricably linked will be focused around three major themes: Healthy Cities, Good Governance, and Health Literacy. The conference will chart a new course for the next 15 years, aimed at inspiring national governments, municipal leaders, and other stakeholders to grasp the great potential of promoting health across all sectors of society.
According to the World Health Organization, “The conference represents an historic moment: 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the first ever global health promotion conference, which generated the landmark ‘Ottawa Charter’ for Health Promotion. Significantly, the event is also being held during the first year of implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).”
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. World leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at last year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Agenda aims to bring an end to poverty, inequality, and climate change through the achievement of 17 sustainable development goals and 169 targets within the next 15 years. The 17 sustainable development goals are:
- No Poverty 10. Reduced Inequalities
- Zero Hunger 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
- Good Health and Well-Being 12. Responsible Consumption and Production
- Quality Education 13. Climate Action
- Gender Equality 14. Life Below Water
- Clean Water and Sanitation 15. Life On Land
- Affordable and Clean Energy 16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
- Decent Work and Economic Growth 17. Partnerships for the Goals
- Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
