Achieving continuous quality improvement

Internationally accredited hospitals in the UAE and Thailand Challenge

The client hospitals were getting started on the journey to achieve accreditation or certification in the international community.

To achieve this, our clients had to demonstrate effective use of clinical practice guidelines, improved clinical outcomes, compliance with disease management standards, and patient satisfaction.

Approach

We implemented monitoring tools to effectively improve and complete patient record documentation.  We devised innovative staff motivation and recognition programs to engage all staff in continuous quality improvement activities as well as reduce high attrition rates especially among nursing staff.

We evaluated the implementation and success of disease-specific clinical practice guidelines, clinical pathways, and performance measures to sustain their focus on quality improvement and patient safety following achievement of initial accreditation.

We identified the first steps to follow once the client hospital has achieved accreditation. We conducted a risk assessment and designed an operational hand-over plan to ensure the client would maintain compliance with standards between on-site surveys.

Results

Client hospitals achieved and maintained accreditation and were also recognized for disease-management certification.

Qualitative and quantitative results indicated that the projects achieved a significant shift of focus towards continuous quality improvement and patient safety.
