"It is important to involve young people as they understand their problems like no one else and have ideas for how to solve them. They are curious and confident and capable of doing anything"

International Day of the Girl Child 2020

Sunday, October 11, 2020
The world is home to more than 1.1 billion girls under age 18, who are poised to become the largest generation of female leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers the world has ever seen.

Looking to support?

SHOFCO believes that women and girls are the key to making long lasting change in the communities they serve. SHOFCO’s two tuition-free schools for girls in the Kibera and Mathare slums teach an innovative curriculum that encourages girls to dream big and empowers them with the skills and self-confidence they need to reach those dreams. Educating a girl from the urban slums has a ripple effect, as their students are poised to become advocates for their communities and lead transformative change in Kenya and worldwide.

While the world continues to feel the public health impacts of the pandemic, Kenya’s urban slum dwellers are also experiencing deep economic impacts. Families, already living hand-to-mouth, have lost jobs and income as a result of the pandemic and are forced to make the difficult decision between feeding their children or buying a mask. To celebrate International Day of the Girl this year, we are asking for your support to ensure that families don’t have to sacrifice education for their daughters.
