World Health Day – April 7, 2021
World Health Day is celebrated globally every April 7th, bringing awareness to a specific health topic of concern. This year, WHO is dedicated to building a fairer, healthier world.
The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us much about who we are over the past year, and we have all been impacted in many different ways. However, it has been relentless for the countries and communities already vulnerable to disease due to a lack of healthcare services. The variables that decide how well a country can handle a pandemic are endless, but poor housing conditions and education, fewer employment opportunities, gender inequality, and little to no access to safe environments, including clean water, food and air are a few of the major issues many communities have had to face. Groups of people are suffering entirely due to the conditions in which they are born and live.
Our world is an unequal one. We must find ways to help one another, which in turn, will help us all.
As WHO calls on leaders around the world to ensure that everyone has living and working conditions that are conducive to good health, we must also look to each other. The MCN Foundation was founded based on the belief that health is a basic human right, and that communities should be empowered to take control of their health and establish a vibrant and participatory healthcare system.
The MCN Foundation has worked with several grassroots organizations to achieve these goals by:
- Increasing access to basic healthcare education in rural communities.
- Promoting grassroots healthcare education: working with individuals to become or strengthen their skills as community based health workers.
- Facilitating job creation through entrepreneurial endeavours to cultivate long-term financial independence.
- Providing continuing education for current nurses and caregivers in rural regions.
- Educating individuals on the possibilities of healthcare as a career.
- Applying educational content using innovative blends of technologies and modalities including the content and information provided by collaborators and partners.
- Working hand in hand with other organizations supporting women’s empowerment and education on the ground via operational improvements, fundraising, project management and building awareness
- Honoring the autonomy of local communities; encourage the development of individuals, families and communities through shared initiatives.
- Developing partnerships that help a broad spectrum of cultures and geographical locales to create sustainable growth within their communities.
This year as we celebrate World Health Day, we must look to the future and find better ways to make this world a more equal one, ensuring everyone can realize the right to good health.
