world blood donor day – june 14, 2016

Blood connects us all is the theme of this year’s World Blood Donor Day.  The World Health Organization’s (WHO) objectives for this campaign include providing a wider public awareness for regular blood donation; inspiring those who have not donated as of yet; to encourage countries to thank their regular, voluntary, unpaid blood donors and; to persuade countries to commit to self-sufficiency in blood supply.

Key Facts from the World Health Organization

  • 108 million blood donations are collected globally (50% from high-income countries)
  • 62 countries collect 100% of their blood supply from voluntary, unpaid blood donors
  • Blood donation by 1% of the population can meet a nation’s most basic requirement for blood

Take a look at WHO’s website for additional information about blood donations and blood transfusions.
